Dive HMAS Brisbane

Scuba World is the closest dive shop to the ex-HMAS BRISBANE!

It takes approximately 20 minutes to reach the Brisbane from our dive training centre.

Scuba world is the closest dive shop to the ex-HMAS BrisbaneThe entire surface of the ship is covered with oysters and barnacles providing microhabitats for numerous small mobile animals such as rock lobsters, banded coral shrimps, crabs, sea urchins, feather stars, starfish and small fish. The vertical sides of the ship are covered with bright red and yellow encrusting sponges, as well as striking orange and white lace corals. Inside the ship divers observe small barnacles, sea squirts, fan worms and several species of sea firm. Scientists from the Queensland Museum have so far recorded fifteen species of sponges, four species of sea fir, six species of crustacean, thirteen species of sea squirts, nine species of lace corals, and several other animals such as the black feather star, sea urchins, and several species of mollusks.

Ex-HMAS Brisbane lies at a depth of 27 metresex-HMAS BRISBANE lies at a depth of 27 metres, approx 5 Nautical Miles from the mouth of the Mooloolaba Boat Harbour. A Conservation Park managed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service has been declared for the new artificial reef and the area surrounding the sunken ship.

At a length of 133 metres she is easily the largest of the known diveable wrecks in the whole state and as a dive site she literally offers something for everyone.

Notes for Diving the Brisbane

  1. Certified divers ONLY allowed to dive the Brisbane
  2. For the very first dive on the Brisbane every diver must be lead by a Dive Guide regardless of their experience or qualification.
  3. Certified divers must be lead by a qualified Dive Guide if they have not logged experience below 18 metres and/or have less than 9 logged dives.
  4. Less than 20 logged dives- NO penetration of the Brisbane unless accompanied by a qualified dive guide on a 4:1 ratio
  5. More than 20 logged dives but less than 50 logged dives- able to penetrate the Brisbane provided the depth is no greater than 18 metres and provided diver is accompanied by a qualified Dive Guide. Warning: Must not become light locked from the outside
  6. More than 50 logged dives and provided the diver has logged experience beyond 18 metres no restrictions on depth or penetration except Must not become light locked from the outside
  7. Must have wreck penetration/cave specialty if there is a possibility of being light locked

N.B. We spend the surface interval inside the harbour (trip back only takes 10 minutes). It is much more relaxing and pretty well eliminates sea-sickness.
